While Peppermint Scented Geranium can be used in recipes calling for Scented Geraniums, it is really more of a fragrant garden plant than a culinary herb. Since scented geraniums are native to Africa, this is a handy survival mechanism. This covering of “wool” helps to shade the plant and keep it cool. This close up of one of the Peppermint Scented Geranium’s flower sprays shows how this geranium got its specie name tomentosum, which is Latin for densely woolly with matted hairs. The little white flowers can be used as a fragrant garnish. In the lower left corner of the picture to the left, you can see the small sprays of white flowers that this scented geranium randomly exhibits. Since the plant is rather low to the ground it works best in the front of the garden, and would be ideal for hanging over a wall or growing up a tree or rock. Peppermint Scented Geranium sprawls and creates an effective cover for the ground. The under sides remain gray and the stems take on a grayer appearance than the leaves which makes for an attractive complement of colors on the one plant. New leaves tend to be crinkly and extra gray but unfurl with age and become flatter and darker green. Wonderfully felted, large irregularly shaped leaves emit an aroma that will have you looking for a true mint plant. Peppermint Scented Geranium is truly a marvel. It could also have been moved into a larger 5 gallon container. Mid-way through its second spring, it became root bound and was then planted in a permanent spot in the garden. Plants in pots outside can be more susceptible to dying from winter cold than plants in the ground. It was started with one our three-inch pots in spring and then brought into the green house to go through the winter. Note that when growing plants in outdoor containers and baskets, they may require more frequent waterings than they would in the yard or garden.This gorgeous Peppermint Scented Geranium is in a three gallon pot. It is even sizeable enough that it can be grown alone in a suitable container. With its upright habit of growth, it is best suited for use as a 'thriller' in the 'spiller-thriller-filler' container combination plant it near the center of the pot, surrounded by smaller plants and those that spill over the edges. It can be propagated by cuttings however, as a cultivated variety, be aware that it may be subject to certain restrictions or prohibitions on propagation.Ĭhocolate Mint Scented Geranium is a fine choice for the garden, but it is also a good selection for planting in outdoor containers and hanging baskets. This particular variety is an interspecific hybrid. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments. It is not particular as to soil type or pH. It does best in average to evenly moist conditions, but will not tolerate standing water. This plant does best in full sun to partial shade. As an evegreen perennial, this plant will typically keep its form and foliage year-round. It grows at a fast rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for approximately 1 years.
